"THE IMPORTANCE OF THE SPIRITUAL DIMENSION IN POLITICS: CHOOSING LEADERS WHO FOLLOW CHRIST"

In undergoing the political process, especially towards 2024, we rarely meet the requirements of candidates who attach spiritual qualifications as the main capital in political contestation. This creates a paradox between the need for leaders who have spiritual qualities and political realities that often highlight other aspects. Nevertheless, as Christians, we are challenged to vote wisely and put spiritual values first when choosing leaders. In Micah 5:4, we find an important clue related to the character of a good leader: "then he will act and will shepherd them in the strength of the Lord, in the splendour of the name of the LORD his God; they will abide, for now he has become great to the ends of the arth." This verse describes a leader who acts with the power of God, leads with integrity, and maintains the welfare of his people. In a modern political perspective, we are often caught up in campaign rhetoric that emphasises more material aspects and popularity. However, it is important to remember that Rev. Dante Mawene, Chairman of Classis GKI Kemtuk Gresi, emphasised that true leaders are those who understand their responsibility as shepherds for their constituents. leaders who are not only good at speaking but also have a humble and God-fearing heart. As voters, we are invited not to be dazzled by momentary offers or populist promises. Selection criteria should not only dwell on the wealth or support of major parties but rather on the spiritual and moral qualities of a candidate. Rev. Dante Mawene affirms that the leader who has the heart of a shepherd is ready to sacrifice himself for the benefit of his people, imitating the attitude of the Ministry of Christ the Messiah. As Advent Week 1 approaches, we are reminded of the hope of the coming of the Messiah, who brings peace and justice. The election of leaders with spiritual values can be a form of our contribution to realising peace and justice in the midst of the complexity of the political world. As Christians, let's together soak up the message of morality and spiritual quality as we step towards the election of leaders in 2024. May we be able to meet a better future by choosing those who not only speak the truth but also live in the truth.
