WCC HIGHLIGHTS INCLUSIVITY AT MISSION CONSULTATION IN FINLAND

During the International Mission Partnership Consultation held in Finland from 26-30 August, the World Council of Churches (WCC) Ecumenical Disability Advocates Network took center stage by sharing insights and inspiration on the importance of inclusivity. This international event, organized by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland, was last held in 2014 in Järvenpää, Finland.

The consultation was attended by representatives from various partner organizations of the church worldwide, including countries such as Japan, Taiwan, Angola, Cambodia, and Colombia. With the theme “Your Will Be Done – Church and Mission in Changing Landscapes,” the discussions focused on the significant role of the church in responding to global challenges.

Anjeline Okola, program coordinator for the WCC Ecumenical Disability Advocates Network, provided updates on the network’s advocacy efforts, which are partly supported by the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Mission. In her reflection, Okola emphasized the importance of equality and respect for all human beings as God’s creation.

“Including persons with disabilities is key to ensuring that everyone fully enjoys their human rights and actively participates in their community,” said Okola. She also stressed that significant changes are needed to address the longstanding marginalization of people with disabilities.

Okola reminded the participants that today’s world requires transformation to respond to the multiple crises it faces, and the church holds a responsibility to be a driving force behind that change. “We must be the agents of transformation for the world to address the challenges it currently encounters,” she concluded.

Through this discussion, the WCC reaffirmed its commitment to promoting inclusivity and justice in the church’s mission, as well as the vital role of the church in bringing about positive change in the diverse global community.
