THREE YEARS OF RUSSIA’S INVASION: A HEARTFELT CALL FOR A CEASEFIRE AND PEACE IN UKRAINE

On the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the WCC once again calls for a ceasefire.

As February 24 marks three years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Secretary-General of the World Council of Churches (WCC), Rev. Prof. Dr. Jerry Pillay, sadly observes that the war continues with no signs of ending soon.

“The futility of this war is reflected in the enormous loss of life, especially among civilians and children, as well as the massive destruction and displacement,” he said. “Vital civilian infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, and water supplies, has been damaged or destroyed, often as a result of deliberate attacks.”

Pillay also pointed out that the invasion, along with the accompanying war crimes and crimes against humanity, continues to claim more lives, destroy communities, and shatter hopes for the future.

“Once again, we call for dialogue and negotiations to achieve a just and lasting peace,” Pillay stated. “The WCC welcomes any legitimate efforts that genuinely aim to establish lasting peace in the region, without merely rewarding aggression and violations of the many international legal principles established after World War II to protect the vulnerable from the oppression of the powerful.”

Pillay added that undermining the rule of law in such a manner would only invite further aggression. “Moreover, the legitimacy of any peace process ultimately depends on the involvement of the victims of this aggression at the negotiating table and in decision-making,” he said. “We pray for an immediate ceasefire, for the unity of Christians against violence and injustice, and for the peace called upon by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.”
