PASTORS HAND OVER LAND TO LOCAL FARMS: GOVERNMENT AND COMMUNITY COLLABORATION IN JAYAPURA
Jayapura, February 27, 2024: Acting (Pj) Governor Muhammad Ridwan Rumasukun participated in the chili harvest carried out in Ifale Village, Sentani District, Jayapura regency, on Tuesday morning (27/2/2024). The chili harvesting activity this time attracted attention because it was carried out in the yard of Pdt. Albert Suebu's house, which is managed independently by five self-managed farmer groups. Acting Governor Rumasukun expressed appreciation to landowners and local residents who have encouraged the planting of peppers in the yard. He hopes that this initiative can serve as an example for other residents in Bumi Cenderawasih to utilize the yard more effectively. "Especially soon, we will enter the fasting month of Eid. If all plant chili in the yard, then I think the selling price during the holidays will be normal because of sufficient availability," said Ridwan. In addition to reducing inflation, the initiative of Rev. Albert Suebu is also expected to provide additional income for local farmer groups. "Involving groups of citizens to plant chili peppers, if it is done on a large scale, will definitely improve their economy," he added. Ridwan also promised agricultural equipment assistance to local farmer groups, including water pumps and bedmakers. In addition, it will provide assistance of Rp10 million for each of the five local farmer groups. High appreciation also came from the acting chairman of the Papua PKK TP, Linda Onibala. According to him, initiatives from landowners and residents deserve praise for helping government programs suppress inflation. "I think it's incredible that a pastor or church leader has the idea to plant chili peppers on his land, then motivate and engage the congregation. This is very good," he said. "Hopefully this can motivate other residents in Papua to use their yards positively," he added. Thus, chili harvesting activities in the yard of the house are concrete evidence of the community's efforts to participate in local economic development and increase mutual prosperity.
