YOUNG GKI LEADER URGES BENYAMIN GURIK TO APOLOGIZE FOR CONTROVERSIAL SOCIAL MEDIA STATEMENT

Jayapura – Franciskus Xaverius Rumere, a young leader of the Evangelical Christian Church (GKI) known for his active role in various church youth organizations, has called on the Chairman of the Papua Provincial KNPI, Benyamin Gurik, to immediately issue a public apology to the GKI Synod leadership. This demand follows Benyamin's viral Facebook post, which was deemed offensive for referring to the GKI Synod leaders as "bodok" (a derogatory term), sparking widespread criticism.

Franciskus, commonly known as FXR, stated that the post was highly inappropriate, especially coming from a youth leader who should set a good example. According to him, the statement not only tarnished the reputation of GKI but also demonstrated immoral, unethical behavior and a lack of respect for church leaders.

"As the Chairman of KNPI Papua and the son of a preacher from one of the denominational churches in Papua, Benyamin should have displayed proper manners. His behavior reflects a lack of respect for church leaders and the Christian community as a whole," FXR emphasized on Thursday (28/11).

Franciskus, who has an extensive track record in church youth service, including roles as former Coordinator of PAM GKI Klasis Port Numbay and Chairman of the Papua Youth Mission Center, gave Benyamin Gurik 24 hours to issue a public apology. Failing that, he vowed to take the matter to court.

"This is not just a personal issue but one that concerns the dignity of church leaders and the entire GKI community. If no apology is issued within 24 hours, we are prepared to pursue legal action," he reiterated.

Benyamin Gurik's post has drawn scrutiny for failing to uphold ethical and moral values, particularly as he leads an organization as significant as KNPI Papua. As KNPI Chairman, Benyamin's role should involve setting a positive example in respecting diversity and religious leadership in Papua.

As of the time of reporting, Benyamin Gurik has not issued an official statement regarding these demands. However, his post has been met with sharp criticism from various groups, including GKI youth and community leaders in Papua, who have deemed the statement inappropriate.

This incident has also ignited discussions on social media and among Christian communities in Papua. Many support Franciskus's firm stance and hope that Benyamin will apologize to resolve the controversy.

Meanwhile, several church youth organizations in Papua are reportedly ready to lend support if the case escalates to legal proceedings. Benyamin Gurik's decision in the near future will determine whether this issue can be resolved amicably or will proceed to legal action.
