ATTACK AT GERMAN CHRISTMAS MARKET, WCC EXPRESSES CONDOLENCES AND CONDEMNATION

The World Council of Churches (WCC) strongly condemns the attack that occurred at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, on December 20. In this tragic incident, a car struck a crowd of visitors, causing many injuries and claiming two lives, including that of a small child.

Rev. Prof. Dr. Jerry Pillay, General Secretary of the WCC, and Bishop Dr. Heinrich Bedford-Strohm, WCC moderator, expressed deep sorrow over the event. They emphasized that this act of violence contradicts the spirit of Christmas, which teaches love, peace, and unity.

“We strongly condemn the heinous attack on innocent civilians. Christmas markets should be places of joy and togetherness, not scenes of tragedy,” said Pillay.

Pillay also expressed solidarity with the victims and their families. He prayed for the swift recovery of the injured and strength for those who lost loved ones. “We reject all forms of hatred and violence. Let us work together to be peacemakers in a divided world,” he added.

Bishop Bedford-Strohm added that this incident has caused fear and deep sadness for many people. “We are holding the victims and their families in our prayers. Such violence must not be allowed to continue,” he said
