A TRAGEDY IN TANZANIA LEAVES 11 MISSIONARIES DEAD AND EIGHT INJURED.
A terrible accident near Arusha, Tanzania, has taken a tragic toll on the missionary community. Darlene Cunningham, co-founder of the Christian training organisation YWAM with her late husband Loren Cunningham, stated that this incident was a historic loss for the Christian ministry. Eleven missionaries were killed in the accident, while eight others suffered serious injuries. The missionaries were participants in the Executive Master's course at the University of the Nations, based in Arusha. They were travelling to Maasai Land on two buses to observe community development rograms. While on their way home to Arusha, a truck that had lost its brakes crashed into their second bus, crushing it from top to bottom. "Eleven of our beloved friends were killed, and eight others were seriously injured, fighting for their lives.
We have never seen a tragedy of this magnitude in the entire history of YWAM, and we are all devastated," Cunningham said. The victims are known as the main leaders of the YWAM in the region. They are dedicated people who provide services, lead YWAM bases, and provide leadership in education and other fields. Their deaths left a great void in the missionary community. Although only some of the victims' names have been released for security reasons, their families and friends have publicly shared photos of their full portraits. One of the victims, Claire Mataia, who had been married for less than a year, was a dedicated teacher and served throughout Africa and the Middle East. Her husband, Paulo Mataia, survived the accident. While the victims were paid their respects, their families asked for prayers and support from Christian communities around the world. This loss is a profound blow to Christian missionary communities and ministers around the world. May the victims rest in peace and the wounded recover fully.
