RELIGIOUS MODERATION PIONEER ORIENTATION AT HORISON JAYAPURA HOTEL

Jayapura, April 3, 2024—On Wednesday, April 3, 2024, an orientation event took place, which was attended by the director of Christian Affairs, the Director General of Christian Guidance, Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Rev. Amsal Yowei, who represents the Director General of Christian Guidance. Also present at the event were the head of Christian affairs of the Regional Office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of Papua province, Rev. Toni Sehartian, as well as 36 leaders of Christian churches in Papua province. This event aims to provide a deeper understanding of the importance of religious moderation and the role of Christian church leaders in promoting tolerance and inter-religious harmony in Papua province. On that occasion, Rev. Amsal Yowei delivered an inspiring speech about the importance of maintaining diversity in society, especially in areas that have diverse cultural and religious wealth, such as Papua. He also stressed the need for collaboration between government, religion, and society in creating a peaceful and harmonious environment. Meanwhile, Rev. Toni Sehartian highlighted the important role of the Christian Church in realizing peace and overcoming conflicts that may arise in society. He stressed that religious tolerance is not only the responsibility of the government but also a shared responsibility for all elements of society. The event, which was held at the Horison Jayapura Hotel, was also filled with interactive discussion sessions where participants could share experiences and ideas about how to be a pioneer in driving religious moderation in their respective churches. With this activity, it is hoped that the leaders of Christian churches in Papua province can become active agents of change in strengthening inter-religious harmony and peace, as well as strengthening a wider collaborative network in building a better and more harmonious Papua.
