The World Council of Churches (WCC) conference, which will take place in Egypt in 2025, will bring together the main Christian traditions to examine how churches can collaborate to achieve true unity, drawing inspiration from the first church's experience.

The sixth Conference of Faith and World Order will mark the anniversary of the world's first ecumenical council—the Council of Nicaea in 325—which was a landmark event in the Christian faith.

In a video interview conducted by WCC, Reverend Prof. Dr. Sandra Beardsall, moderator of the Nicaea 2025 steering group of the WCC Faith and Order Commission, spoke about the importance of the Council of Nicaea and how it is driving the World Conference.

In an interview with Dr. Stephen Brown, editor of the Journal Ecumenical Review of the WCC, Beardsall said, "Nicaea was the first council that brought together Christians from all over the world to meet and make decisions."

Under the protection of the Emperor at Nicaea in 325, Christians who had recently experienced violence in the Roman Empire could gather to affirm their faith and bear witness to those around them.

According to Beardsall of the United Church of Canada, the Nicene Creed is a statement of faith that will "bind all Christians to one another." This is the result of their consideration.

"They have largely succeeded in forming communities that are able to work, able to overcome many social, cultural, and theological differences, and I think there are so many broken places in the world today that need that kind of energy and experience."

The World Conference, organized by the WCC Commission on Faith and Order, will take place in Wadi El Natrun, Egypt, near Alexandria, from October 24 to 28, 2025.

This will be the sixth meeting since the First World Conference on Faith and Order in Lausanne in 1927 and will be the center of WCC activities to mark Nicaea.

Beardsall states that "each of these conferences sought to respond to the problems of the churches of its time."

So this sixth World Conference will try to address the problems we face today with some of the same questions about our faith, how we live our lives as a church, and how we can call on each other for better Christian unity.
