Davos, January 15: "rebuilding trust" is the opening theme of the Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos. Rev. Prof. Dr. Jerry Pillay, secretary general of the World Council of Churches (WCC), stressed how important multilateral cooperation is for the common good in the long term.
In his opening speech, Pillay stressed that we must all work together to deal with an unprecedented global crisis, especially due to conflict, climate change, and growing economic inequality.
Pillay called on meeting participants, comprising leaders in politics, economics, and business, to renew their commitment to sustainable solutions.
In this meeting, one can reflect on the increasingly conflicted and divided state of the world. Pillay states that trust is the key to uniting human society and the global community.
"In the face of crises such as a destructive climate, widespread conflict, and economic inequality that harm many, we must commit to working together to create solutions that have a positive impact on all."
Four main themes of the meeting were mentioned by Pillai: "achieving security and cooperation in a fractured world," "creating growth and jobs for a new era," "artificial intelligence as a driving force for the economy and society," and "long-term strategies for climate, nature, and energy."
In order to achieve significant progress in each of these aspects, it is important to rebuild trust. "This meeting is not only about the exchange of ideas and views, but also about real action."
To achieve positive and sustainable change, we must unite in the spirit of multilateral cooperation, Pillay said.
Along with the main theme of the meeting, the hope is that the world leaders present will unite in determination to rebuild trust as a foundation to guide the world towards a better future.
