Six African Anglican women bishops, or "six Africans," gathered at the University of St. Paul in Nairobi, Kenya, on January 11 to share their ideas on "Christian Leadership for the 21st Century.".
More than 500 people attended the meeting, which focused on Thursday in the Black Campaign for a World Without Rape and Violence.
The bishops spoke about their personal journeys in a panel discussion held by the University of St. Paul in partnership with the Sisters of African Anglicans in Leadership Journeying Together.
Prof. Esther Mombo, a senior lecturer at the university, introduced the "six Africans" and admitted that it was not easy for women bishops to become leaders. She said, "Women should be leaders because leadership should reflect the members of the church," and "for a long time, women were in the pews and men were at the altar." Reverend Filomena Tete Estevã was one of the bishops who spoke. He said, "It is not and will not be easy, but I believe that we have a God who can do everything for us."
"We carry the women's flag. As she declared, "I am the first female bishop of the churches in Angola, and I carry the flag for all women in Angola who show their representation in the church," she was applauded.
Another speaker was Bishop Dr. Dalcy Badeli Dlamini, who is now the second female bishop in Eswatini and the fourth in southern Africa.
"It is an honor and a privilege to be among the six Africans," he said. “It's really humbling"," said the bishop of the Diocese of Lesotho, the Reverend Dr. Vicentia Refiloe Kgabe.
"Leadership is the one who goes through the fire to sanctify those who come next.”
