Although still shrouded in mystery regarding its opening date, the new airport in West Papua, named Airport I.S. Kijne, attracted the attention of many. The airport is located in Wondama Bay Regency, West Papua, and is built on an area of 280 hectares.
The name of this airport is taken from the figure of Izaak Samuel Kijne, a Dutch teacher who is remembered for his dedication to education in Papua New Guinea. I.S. Kijne, who was born to a carpenter father and a Dutch Jewish mother, spent four years in Klokkenburg Nijmegen before deciding to move to Papua.
Wondama Bay Regent has long expected the construction of this airport, and President Joko Widodo has also promised it. The Wondama Bay Regional Government has prepared the location and technical documents required for the construction of this airport. According to the latest information, all documents required by the Wondama Bay Regency government have been completed.
Although it is planned to be completed in 2024, there is no certainty when exactly this airport will be completed. However, it is possible that the project will be completed by 2025.
The official website of Wondama Bay District, wondamakab.go.id, as reported by JatimNetwork.com, mentioned that two major religious events will be held in Wondama Bay Regency. This adds to the expectation of the opening of the airport.
